Getting Started
Before you begin learning how to drive you need a few things first. First of all you need a Provisional Driving License, valid for use within Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
If you have a Provisional Driving License and you are 17 years of age or older, you are ready to begin your driving lessons now.
Although if you don’t have a license yet, there are some rules and strict guidelines that must be followed before you can begin driving:
- You must be a resident of Great Britain or Northern Ireland
- You must be at least 17 years or older
- You must meet the minimum eyesight requirement
- You must not be prevented from driving for any reason
- You must have a valid UK Passport or another form of Identity
- You must be able to provide address details from over the past 3 years
If you are eligible to apply for a Provisional Driving License, you can either do so by person, post or online.
Applying by Person or Post
To apply via these methods you will need the D1 application form. The D1 application form is available by using the DVLA Form Ordering Service, or by going into your local Post Office.
Applying Online
You can now apply online for your provisional driving license through the DirectGov website.
